An old jaya friend of Trystin, black tipped, surly, perhaps a bit hard to wrap your head around. He is very unpredictable, grins in a dark way, friends since Trystin was a young orphan, enlisted to help find Arosha/Ali. They owe each other a debt. Trystin helps him pretend his death but thinks he really did die, and in time, when they rediscover each other, it is stunning he was alive. It is a deep debt.

Keld identifies as rejected, oldest of his family apparently from Sun Sands - Shade Born, no inheritance or occupation to take up. He isn't sure he plans to return. He is the oldest of three fells, with a turfen and a fell for parents. They are cloth makers and farmers.

When Trystin first encounters him, he remarks that the jaya has the build of a fell, all in shades of black and charcoal, a majestic colouring that is not from the southern part of the Third Kingdom. Keld's spines are longer than in Dust Settling or that portion of the south, tipped in white, with a vertical line painted on the right side of his face, eyes with a ring of brown and one of bronze. Their paces match but the jayan's are heavy, long, well-balanced, youthful but not young. Keld dress in tan and brown, in the kansoro style, with a gun and knife in the belt, a cloak over the back. Trystin's first impression is that Keld is surly, unpredictable, hard to wrap around Trystin's head. The pair are best friends.

Keld thinks Trystin is the quintessential example of the sky-born myth.

Keld faked his own death which certianly convinced Trystin.

He keeps a braided length in his pocket he tugs in blessing wherever he goes.
